Tutorials are organized as part of the 2024 IEEE International Conference on Smart Mobility IEEE (SM'24).
The Tutorials at IEEE (SM’24) bring together top thought-leaders and pioneers from industry and academia to exhibit and discuss their latest development and deployment results, as well as scientific and technical advances in the fields of smart mobility systems and services.

Accepted Workshops

EV Enabling Technologies and Infrastructure: Opportunities and Challenges

High penetration of Electric Vehicles is of a great concern in many countries. Utilization of EVs on large scale has not been achieved yet due to many reasons such as high cost of batteries, and insufficient number of public fast charging stations. However, the investment in EV industry and EV charging hubs have considerable opportunities and look feasible in many countries, which can lead to the satisfactory commercial acceptance of EVs and gradual substitution of conventional vehicles.
The purpose of this workshop is to provide an opportunity for researchers from academia and industry to present their research works related to some EV enabling technologies. 
The workshop also aims to attract representatives from industry and government to discuss the investment opportunities in these new technologies and the possible ways to overcome the existing challenges. Some recommendations and guidelines can be concluded from the workshop as well.

Technical Topics:

  1. EV Charging Schemes.
  2. Topologies of Power Electronic Converters.
  3. Control Techniques of PE Converters.
  4. Battery Charging Strategies.
  5. Future Trends: PV Stations and Energy Buffers.
  6. Real Time Simulation (RTS) and Hardware-in-the-Loop (Hil) Prototyping.

Non-Technical Topics:

Current situation of EV market and commercial acceptance in KSA including:

  1. EV Charging Stations and Service Providers.
  2. Technical Specifications and Concerning Codes.
  3. Investment Opportunities and Feasibility Studies.
  4. Readiness of Educational Programs for the Era of EVs.

Panel Title: Engineering and Societal Adoption Challenges of Automated Driving Systems

Across the globe, there are tens of companies pursuing the development of automated driving systems (ADS), ranging over SAE Driving Automation Levels 3-5. There are several open engineering challenges of ADS software – particularly in development and validation of ADS operation in challenging weather conditions, critical corner cases, dealing with a variety of pedestrians and traffic conditions, and cooperation with human operated vehicles. Many standards (e.g., ISO 26262, ISO 21448) are emerging providing guidelines to ensure safety of ADS under the intended operating conditions. On the other hand, there are societal concerns that technological advancements such as ADS and robotics might bring in, e.g., people being out of work, competing with automation etc.. Initiatives like Partners for Automated Vehicle Education (PAVE) aim to alleviate such concerns by educating public and policymakers on pros and cons of automated driving systems. This panel discussion will focus on ADS engineering and societal adoption challenges and offer some possible solutions.
